Driver’s Spotlight – Doug Hubbard

In this edition of the SCCA Sacramento Chapter Drivers’ Spotlight, we recognize none other than our Chapter President, Doug Hubbard. You may recognize his voice as the ever enthusiastic and energetic announcer for some of the race groups as well as the one going all of the rules and regulations at the drivers’ meetings.

He drives the red or yellow 1989 Corvette. He has been racing these same cars since 2001. Doug has been enjoying this sport since the late nineties to now. His in-laws, Ken and Patti Yeo are the ones responsible for introducing him to AutoX.

You can find him getting pumped up for racing days by listening to ‘Surfing with the Alien’ or ‘Freebird”.

If money were no object, you would see Doug driving around in a 1964 Aston Martin DB5, as that is his dream car.

He would like to enjoy a delicious meal having a conversation and a few laughs, I hope, with his Grandpa Elwood Hubbard.

With is over 20-year racing career, it would make sense for him to have quite a few proud moments, but the one that stands out the most to him is something he says often “parking lot and construction cones”.

Doug shared that one thing people would be surprised to learn about him is that right before big events, vacations etc., his anxiety goes through the roof and his wife, Penny has to clam him down a bit. Speaking of Penny, that is the silly talent that Doug possesses. He stated that he could piss his wife off at the drop of a hat. He is very good at doing that, you can ask her.

He does like animals, so he said that he would be a bulldog if he were to pick a breed of dog.

The car he is always watching, and happens to be his favorite, is the 1989 yellow corvette, and for anyone out on that track, we all know that that is Mr. Ken Yeo.

If Doug could have any superpower, real or imagined, he would pick the superpower of patience and understanding.

Being the president of the chapter and having a long career in Auto-X, some great advice he would want any newcomer to know, is to “never worry about winning or losing. Those things will come. It is the time here having fun with friends and family that are more important.”

Doug really enjoys his family and friends, especially if is spending his time where there are no phones, radios, tv, electronics with just his family and friends in the Gualala Redwood Campground.

He has been to some exotic locations, such as the Sinai Desert, Egypt, which is his dream travel destination.

Thank you to Doug Hubbard for sharing this information with the fellow members and potential soon to be members.
